I Was This Close: a tragedy by Me

This was a last minute assignment for school. I spent like an hour writing it. I had to write a narrative and blablabla... I just thought of this and threw it together. But I figured someone might enjoy the story.

I Was This Close: a tragedy by Me

I was so close to seeing two of my favorite bands perform; alas I missed them by a couple hours.  I had been planning on going to Joshua Fest sense April when I heard Five Iron Frenzy and the O. C. Supertones would be performing. It seemed my plans would be ruined in late august when I learned that the person I was going to go with would not be able to. I was pretty disappointed. If only I knew how nice it would have been had the story ended there.
As it turned out my friend Mat and his family would be going to run a booth for Compassion International. So I sent him a text asking if he could give me a ride. He said yes and the next thing I knew I was on my way to J-fest. On the way I overheard Mat’s parents talking about their plans for the day. They were going to work their 10:00-7:00 shift at the Compassion booth, then go home. There I was in the car on my way to this big event and I had to leave around 7:30 P.M. That disappointment I had felt earlier was returning. I hoped my bands would play before 7:00.
My hopes were crushed upon arrival. After paying my $55 ticket to get in I read the stage schedule and find that the Supertones start at 8:00 and go to 9:00, and Five Iron didn’t start till 10:00! I was upset to say the least unless I could find another ride home I wouldn’t be able to see my bands.
As I wandered around the festival watching much less interesting bands and looking for anyone I knew I found my fake cousins real cousins, or at least some of them. Unfortunately they live three hours out of my house’s way so there was no chance of getting a ride with them. I spent most of the rest of the day talking in the hot sun with Evan, and Laurel about my situation, books, games, and anything else we thought of. They even had a card they wanted to give to Five Iron and I got so sign it. But then I decided it might be a good idea to eat some food, seeing as it was well past lunch time.
Although I wasn’t hungry I ate some trail mix I had brought. As I halfheartedly snacked on nuts and raisins I saw some friends from my town. I but when I explained my predicament I found that they were camping over night, and I hadn’t bought the camping ticket. I just paid for the extremely overpriced day ticket. I knew that was my last chance. There was no way to see some of the best bands… ever…
So I tried to enjoy what was left of my day. I spent some more time with my cousins(ish) and my friend Mat. Then we were on our way home. We stopped at Joes Tacos on the way home. I noticed that the name Joe wasn’t very Mexican and when I tested the tacos I found they weren’t the most Mexican either. Sprinkled with parmesan and containing normal ground beef rather that carne asada they were rather americanized, but still good. I wasn’t that hungry but I managed to eat two before we left.
On our way home I took out my phone and turned on some music. And thus I had my own little concert with Mat in the back seat, listening to all my favorite Supertones and Five Iron Frenzy songs. I spent the rest of the week like that, only listening to those two bands. And now I will forever know that I was this close to seeing my favorite bands(ish).

  1. Oh Ben, you've almost made me cry. Seriously. I would have walked home or (more likely) snuck into the campsite without a ticket.

On a more productive note, what did you learn from this experience? How did you grow?
